Backyard Detection of Geomagnetic Storms

Introduction

The physics of Earth's magnetic field and its interaction with the sun have always fascinated me. I saw an article where NOAA discussed Geomagnetic Ground Currents in North America. The article tickled me and brought out interests I've had for many years.

In my own back yard, how could I measure this?

Research

Perplexity to the rescue. Here are two links to my research on the topic:

  1. My research with Perplexity is at https://www.perplexity.ai/search/on-this-page-https-spaceweathe-qlEsXujHR3Cr1vJqsVOTJw

In short, the idea is to plant four 2 meter copper rods at the four corners of my yard. This will be, roughly, a 18 meter square. Each electrode will be connected to a common demarcation point using buried coaxial cable.

With four points, I will be able to measure the direction of the magnetic fields. In short, I will be able to discern when the geomagnetic storms are raging. Cool Stuff! Your Mileage May Vary!
