W7YV Bio

I hold the Extra Class license with the call sign W7YV (Whiskey Seven Yankee Victor). I enjoy CW and phone modes. I am active on several traffic nets. You can often find me checking into the Wyoming Cowboy Net at 3923.5 KHz at 00:45 UTC and the 12th Region Traffic Net at 07:00AM Mountain (local) on the same frequency. I often monitor 20M during the day and lurk around 14058 and 14060.

When Hurricane Katrina happened, something snapped in me and I decided I never wanted to be in a situation where I was dependant upon the government. Becoming a ham was one of the tools I adopted.

I have too many hobbies and not enough time. I like building antennas and testing them on camping trips in the field. I dabble at building 1920 to 1940 transmitter and receiver replicas. I enjoy trying to work playing around with QRP. I don't participate in contests or chase DX much.

Other hobbies include photography, gun collecting, long range shooting, hiking, fishing, Native American flute, Spanish language, and others. I am a Freemason and Past Master of my lodge.

  1. My father had the W7YV call sign from around 1972 to 1984 (his death) in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was a long-time radio operator starting on coast merchant ships in 1924 at age 15. Claimed he could read code in his sleep.
